The first time I heard Mak & Pasteman's 'Mode' I was instantly drawn to their sound. It's all of my favorite elements in dance music put together tastefully and masterfully. 'What it Do' and 'Leave With U' have been receiving support from the likes of Roska, N-Type, Kastle, Distal and Rico Tubbs to name a few, so you're in for a treat.
Mak & Pasteman grew up on a diet of electronica, hip hop, breaks, garage, house and techno, having an appreciation of both the old and new in bass music. Their style is best described as a cocktail of these influences with their multi genre style fusing new and old sounds with modern production techniques and heavy sub bass. Mak’s a resident at at Metropolis, Reclaim the Dancefloor, Ibiza Rocks and Wax On, Pasteman has also resided at Metropolis, Bigger Than Barry and The Bash Out and hosts a weekly radio show every Thursday from 10pm to 12am (2-4pm PST) on www.Rood.fm alongside Descry.
With releases forthcoming on Sounds Of Sumo, Second To None, DiaMind, Wicked Bass, No Stranger To Danger and Ministry of Sound, Mak & Pasteman are interesting a diverse range of industry heads.
We asked them a 6-Pack of questions to get to know them a little better and here's what they had to say.
1. Q. Where were you born?
A. Pasteman - Peterborough
A. Mak - Huddersfield
2. Q. When and where did you first fall in love with electronic dance music?
A. Mak - 13 years old when i ambient music by Jose Padilla and Aphex Twin and a cassette of dj dag from the ioln warehouse in Germany, quickly moved onto jungle and hardcore.
A. Pasteman - Loose Ends - Hanging on a string. First tune i ever played out.
From then it just grew. Perhaps the second tune i really remember from way way back is
808 state.
3. Q. What other kinds of music do you listen to?
A. Pasteman - It would be easier to list what i don't. I try not to listen to too much electronic music when i'm not preparing for sets or radio, i love soul, rhythm and blues, hip hop, folk... music is very emotive so i listen to what matches my mood.
A. Mak - Lots of dub roots and modern dub, jazz funk blues soul etc, 80s n indie
4. Q. The electronic music community has become more tight knit on a global scale in recent years, what is your take on it?
A. Pasteman - I think when your close to the root and involved in the scene you see things differently. As tight knit as certain label communities and rosters are i feel it is all relative, i have been lucky enough to work with some great labels and hot n heavy is definitely one of them, it's a nice feeling to feel part of a label and know the network and have contact with your A&R and mastering engineer, maybe were being tight knit but i'm certainly not complaining!
A. Mak - Do what you feel, dont let the rules other people have apply to you
5. Q. Which is your favorite comedy Monty Python or The Office?
A. Pasteman - Office All Day.
A. Mak - Monty Python
6. Q. Shout Outs?
A. Pasteman - Massive shout to my girl Dorrie for all her continued support! Descry my host for being a general badman, Tanka, Herobot, Wachs Lyrical, Admin, Soularize, Fish, Majora, Too many to mention but you lot are what drive me! Big up!
A. Mak - Big Ups to Wilf , Mark and Dan from Metropolis , Jorden and Griff from Ibiza Rocks n Charlie from Amnesia.
